How to break into tech quicker

Transferable skills for your tech career

Faster. Quicker. Now

Those are just some of the words people want to hear when someone says they want to break into tech.

Of course there is a way to do this faster, but you’re going to have to dig deep, and have some self introspections about yourself.

Unfortunately, for me, I did not do this.

My sister mentioned web development to me and never looked back.

I didn’t take a moment to analyze my strengths and tailor my skills to the jobs that would have actually suited my skill set.

That is my one regret!

So now, we are going to rectify that.

I have a background in journalism.

Do you know what skills I should have written down, if I had taken that moment?

Here they are:

  • Writing

  • Editing

  • Research

  • Proofreading

These are the skills that I believe I posses that can be an asset to breaking into technology. If I had entered these skills in a job search engine or some ai assistive technology, what do you think it would have spat back out at me?

  • Technical Writer: With my writing and editing abilities, I could have pursued a career as a technical writer, creating clear and concise documentation for software and technology products.

  • UX Writer: Leveraging my storytelling skills, I could have explored roles as a UX writer, shaping the user experience through engaging and intuitive content.

  • UX Researcher: Given my experience in research, I could have delved into user experience research, uncovering valuable insights to inform the design and development of tech products.

These are just some of the jobs that were suggested to me.

If I had taken the time to just do this, I could have changed the trajectory of my tech career. I could have accelerated my entry into the tech world. Aligning my previous experience with the job I was pursuing would have given me a head start.

These are call transferable skills. They are skills that can be used across industries. So no matter if you are transitioning careers, skills like that are still valuable.

If you want to break into tech quicker, I would suggest write down 3-5 transferable skills.

Enter them in a job search engine or ChatGPT.

And you’ll have your answer on what you should focus on and how you can break into tech quicker!

But remember breaking into tech is not just about speed; it’s about leveraging your unique strengths and aligning them with the opportunities available. With the right mindset and strategic approach, you can pave your way to a successful and fulfilling tech career.
