How to pick a career
Being a self-taught developer is like finding a needle in a high stack.
Why?
Because you don’t have a syllabus. You don’t have anyone to guide you; the information is endless, and you don’t have a clue how to navigate it all.
Here is what I did.
I chose a path that fits my personality. This advice may seem simple but trust me, it will help in the long run.
I picked Front-end Development because I am a visual person. I want to see my work. I want to see what I have created. I want to imagine what I can create. How’d I style it and rework it if necessary!
Front-end development afforded me those opportunities.
And when it became tough, I stuck with it.
Why?
Because I liked it. It’s as simple as that.
Imagine I had chosen something that was less visual. Like working with data or the back-end. Sure, they pay well, but when it probably had gotten more difficult to learn, I would have quit.
Because I didn’t like it.
Focus on what you like first, not the money.
The money will come.
Now that I know the front end, it has allowed me to gain an appreciation for the back-end. If I wanted to, I could switch my career because I know that the back-end can be something worth pursuing.
Choose a career that you like and then you branch off.
Don’t focus on what anyone else says.
If you like, go for it!
