The Crucial Step To Your First Job
Get that first interview
I got lucky.
Extremely lucky.
And I know you don’t want to hear that but sometimes you need a little luck when you are trying to accomplish a difficult task.
And breaking into tech is hard.
But first you need an interview.
This is where I was getting tripped up at.
I had the skills - HTML, CSS, Javascript. (You might need more in this market!)
I had the portfolio.
I had the optimized LinkedIn and resume but recruiters were not knocking down my door and that was because I had no experience.
I had nothing to put on my resume and LinkedIn to show that I had actually done work to impact a company meaningfully. That keyword Front End Developer was not on my resume for anyone to actually stop and read it, so I had to get it.
I used the first resources that most people have around them and that was friends and families. I asked them if they needed a website built and like I said I got stupidly lucky.
A family friend actually needed a website and the rest is history.
I built it, asked for metrics, and put Freelance Front End Developer on my resume.
And low and behold I got my first interview!
Of course this might not be the case for you and the people around you might not need your services
But other people do.
I would suggest looking into local businesses to see if they could use what you are offering. Look at their website, see how you could improve them and reach out.
Here is a template I would use if I hadn’t had that family friend:

It doesn’t have to be exactly like this but in every message you send you want to convey your skills and how you help them enhance their business.
I know that is is scary reaching out but if you want to do the improbable you will have to get a little uncomfortable.
Remember, you only need one yes, and from their your journey will be one step closer to be realized!.
