Everybody sees the flashy numbers that come with tech—a 100k salary at the minimum. Stock options that could potentially retire you. A bonus that is more than some people make in a year. That type of success and lifestyle sucks you in, and I believed that it was what I should strive for. I thought that was what breaking into tech was about.
But I was wrong!
100k was not going to greet me with open arms once I broke into tech. I found this out because the jobs I interviewed for were half that. And that demoralized me. I thought tech was about making six figures and having perks that came along with that. When I didn’t start at the goal, I thought I had failed.
But I didn’t
If breaking into tech is what you want to do, realize that you will most likely start at entry level. Sure, you hear about the people who jump straight to the moon on their first go, but that is not reality.
You are going to start at the beginning, and that is okay. Breaking into tech is hard enough without the pressure to make 100k. Focus on getting your foot in the door because that is the hardest part.
I broke into tech with a junior entry position that was 52k.
Was I stung by that amount?
Yes, I was.
But I accomplished the most difficult portion. Once you have that first job and experience then you can worry about getting to 100k. That first job is a stepping stone to get you where you need to be.
So don’t worry about how much money you will make. Don’t worry about making above 100k with your first job. Don’t worry about the bonuses. Don’t worry about what others are doing.
Just get that first job and the rest will come!
