Frustrations come, Frustrations Go
Dealing with your frustrations
During my tech journey, I had a bunch of mini breakdowns and they were all due to frustration. I can recall when I quit because I couldn’t figure out a particular syntax in Javascript. When I couldn’t get the styling I imagined for my website to translate to the screen. It took me weeks to get back to coding because of these feelings.
But I think the most unsettling event I can recall was when I broke down crying to my sister because I felt like a failure. I don’t remember what exactly caused it but I can remember it was due to coding. Feelings of inadequacy and ineptitude were driving the thoughts that what I was doing was pointless. That my goals were unattainable and that I should stop trying.
The only thing that saved me was that I broke down to my sister. She told me that even though I was feeling this way, it was perfectly okay to have those feelings. She told me that needed to stop putting unrealistic pressure on myself and that I should take my journey one day at a time.
That conversation shifted my whole mindset.
So, when you first feel the frustrations start to mount, you have to let it out. Yell, to the sky, Write it down. Take a walk. Or like myself, find someone trusted to lean on or give you advice.
The next step is to make sure you take a break. That is what I did. I wanted to make sure that mentally, I was in the correct frame of mind to continue with my journey. It can be as long as you want, just make sure you come back refreshed.
The third step I took to combat my frustrations was to stop with the time constraints. I would stop telling myself that I needed to have something done by a certain time. I placed unnecessary strain on myself trying to keep up with an arbitrary timeline.
Frustration is going to be a part of any journey. You can’t avoid it, you just have to have the ability to work through it. If you don’t you will be unable to move forward. Embrace the frustrations as they come. So, take a deep breath, calm down, and move forward.
