How To Build An App
Get started on building an app
If you want to build an app, just start. That’s the first and most important step. Too often, people get caught up in overthinking—worrying about whether the idea is good enough, whether they know all the right tools, or whether it’s worth their time. Here’s the truth: it doesn’t need to be the next big thing, and it doesn’t need to be perfect. The act of starting alone is a huge step toward learning and growth.
Start Small and Build Momentum
When I started working on my app, I didn’t have a grand plan. It wasn’t about creating something groundbreaking for the world—it was about solving a personal problem. I wanted a way to track my trading decisions. So, I started with a simple feature: logging a trade. That small beginning gave me momentum, and before I knew it, I was adding more features—tracking performance, categorizing trades, and visualizing data.
The beauty of starting with a single feature is that it reduces overwhelm. You don’t need to know every part of your app before you begin. Pick one idea, break it down into something manageable, and build. As you work on that one part, you’ll naturally discover more ideas and improvements.
Learning Through Building
Every app you build becomes a learning opportunity. You’ll encounter new problems, research solutions, and develop better coding habits. For me, building this app reinforced old concepts like database management and API design, while introducing new ones like optimizing performance and user experience. These lessons didn’t come from reading—they came from doing.
Don’t Be Afraid to Iterate
Your app doesn’t need to be perfect right away. In fact, it probably won’t be. That’s okay! The first version is just a starting point. As you learn and gather feedback, you’ll iterate and improve. Every update brings you closer to something that’s truly functional and polished.
So, if you have an idea—even a small one—start. Build the first feature, learn from the process, and keep going. The journey of creating something from nothing is incredibly rewarding, and before you know it, you’ll have built something you’re proud of.
Remember: the most important step is the one you take today. Just start.
