I Know, I Know Nothing

When I first started my journey into tech, I thought I had to be a master. I believed I had to know the ins and outs of every technology, language, and framework. I assumed that if I didn’t, I’d be unemployable.

And I took that pressure to heart. I studied day and night. I poured over textbooks and tutorials as if my life depended on them. The more I learned, the more I realized how vast this field was. I’d get one concept down, and suddenly, there was a whole new universe of knowledge I didn’t even know existed. Every time I felt like I was getting closer to "knowing it all," the more I realized how little I knew.

It was demoralizing because I knew I didn’t have a STEM degree. I was already behind in that aspect. And on top of that, I was trying to break into tech by being self-taught. However, during an interview, I heard the magical words “I don’t know” spoken by a Senior Software Engineer.

This was when I had a breakthrough: I don’t need to know everything. No one does. And no one should expect you to!

Tech is an ever-evolving field. New languages, tools, and best practices are constantly emerging, and no single person can keep up with everything. And that's okay. What matters is curiosity, adaptability, and a willingness to learn. Mastery isn’t about knowing everything — it’s about being resourceful, knowing how to find solutions, and being okay with not having all the answers immediately.

This realization lifted a weight off my shoulders. I started embracing being a lifelong learner instead of aiming for perfection. Now, I approach each new challenge with excitement instead of fear. If I don’t know something, I see it as an opportunity to grow rather than a flaw.

So, if you’re feeling overwhelmed or unsure of your place in tech, remember: it’s not about knowing everything. It’s about knowing how to learn, how to adapt, and how to ask questions. Embrace the uncertainty, the gaps in your knowledge, and the constant changes. Ironically, the more comfortable you become with not knowing everything, the more confident you’ll feel in your abilities.
