Interview Question - Tell Me About Yourself

Answer interview questions the right way

So, tell me about yourself?

What is the first thing that comes to mind?

It should not be about what dogs you own or where you went to high school. The interviewer is not interested in your personal life and you don’t know how many people answer this question with something personal.

They want to hear about your professional experience.

But what should I say?

Here’s how you should respond:

Interviewer: “So, tell me about yourself”.

Interviewee: “Absolutely! In my previous role as a social media manager, I was responsible for producing content and updating their website with CMS, specifically, Magento. There I was introduced to HTML, CSS, and SQL. When I was laid off, I taught myself those languages and syntaxes, as well as Javascript and React. I’ve created my own portfolio full of projects.

My proudest achievement of my portfolio was when I integrated AI with a e-commerce website, so that those with disabilities can access the website more readily. I know for this current position and company, you want someone who knows web accessibility and I believe that I can fulfill this requirements as well as building components. The projects that I have built come with a lot of robust features and components. Would you like to discuss the projects I’ve built in depth?”

When the interviewer asks this question, this is how you respond because it answers these things they want to hear:

  1. Professional Experience: I've outlined my role, responsibilities, and the technologies I've worked with.

  2. Skills: I've showcased my proficiency in a range of languages and technologies.

  3. Achievements: I've highlighted a notable accomplishment, demonstrating my problem-solving abilities and commitment.

  4. How You Align with the Position: I've connected my skills and achievements with the specific requirements of the position.

This response doesn't just answer the question; it takes it a step further. By subtly steering the conversation towards my strengths, I’m not only showcasing my experience but also emphasizing determination to self-learn. This strategic approach allows you to guide the interview in a direction that aligns with your comfort zones, ensuring you communicate your value effectively. You don’t have to do that last one but it is a wonderful way for you to move forward.

Remember, this is the question that sets up your interview. Make sure you have it right. Practice in the mirror. Have the answer pre written. Do a mock interview!

Just make sure you know what you are going to say because they will ask, and now you know the answer!
