Job Hunting in this Market
It is brutal
I have applied to a handful of jobs recently to see if I could get an interview, and so far I haven’t had any luck. Rejection emails litter my inbox from jobs where I thought I had a chance. Not to mention, I have been ghosted numerous times by recruiters who have reached out to me.
The job market is competitive, intense, and chaotic.
But here is how I plan to combat it:
When I browse on LinkedIn, it’s not solely to apply for jobs. While this strategy can garner interviews, it isn’t the best approach. What I do is this:
Search for “hiring and the name of the job you want”
“Hiring frontend developers”
Message that person
Review their profile and send them a message about the posting
Messaging with intent
You are not just messaging just to connect. You are putting yourself in the conversation as to why you would be a fit for the job
The things you want to include in your introduction
Skills (List the skills you have that match the job description)
Resume
Don’t annoy
If they don’t respond, then it wasn’t meant to be. Constantly messaging them is a surefire way to be ignored.
I have implemented this strategy recently, and I haven’t had any success. Those who I’ve messaged have viewed my profile but haven’t officially reached out to me. But those setbacks will not deter me from continuing to reach out for that introduction. All that it takes is one yes.
Reach out with purpose. Make yourself known. Make space for yourself. Don’t be embarrassed by rejection. Just put yourself out there and what you want to happen, will!
