Learn This, Learn That

Focus your learning

I have learned a lot in my time on the jobs that I have been fortunate enough to have. That doesn’t mean that I have learned everything well. I have been taught about SQL, Redux, Node, Express, GraphQL, etc. However, I have only studied Redux and GraphQL in my free time.

Why?

Because Redux and GraphQL are more important to my development as a front-end developer. Don’t get me wrong, the other technologies are also important to learn, but for my career trajectory, I want to prioritize what I will continuously use.

For example, just recently, I was asked to work with Blazor, .NET, and Python. Blazor and .NET don't align with my interests, but I’m eager to learn Python due to its relevance in web development, analytics, and machine learning.

Just because I want to learn Python does not mean I don’t have to learn other technologies, but if I want to go further, I am going to have to focus on what matters, and here is how I plan to get there:

Prioritize Your Learning Goals

  1. Identify the skills most relevant to your current role or future aspirations. Instead of trying to learn everything, focus on a few key areas that align with your career path.

Create a Structured Learning Plan

  1. Outline a clear, step-by-step learning path that breaks down your goals into smaller, manageable tasks. Set specific milestones to track your progress. This could involve dedicating certain weeks to specific topics or technologies. By organizing your learning, you can maintain momentum and motivation.

Practice Mindfulness in Learning

  1. Recognize when you’re feeling overwhelmed and take breaks as needed. You are not doing yourself any favors by burning yourself out. Balance your learning with other activities to recharge. Remember, continuous learning is a marathon, not a sprint, so it’s important to maintain your enthusiasm.

Remember, whatever works for you is what you should be doing but remember you have to do everything with a purpose. Learn about the technologies that are going to advance your career. Ignore the trends and the fads and maintain focus on what you want and you will get there!
