A Little Better Each Day

No matter how little or how much

When I first started my tech journey, I felt like I had to constantly play catch up.
I didn’t have a STEM degree, I barely knew how to code, and I wasn’t sure where to begin. So, I threw myself into studying. I bought every tutorial and book I could find and almost signed up for a boot camp I couldn’t afford. But I was determined to teach myself.

It didn’t take long for me to burn out. I had no set schedule and told myself that any spare moment should be spent studying. When I didn’t, I felt guilty. I convinced myself that if I wasn’t working non-stop, I didn’t have what it took to succeed in tech.

I’m here to tell you—that approach is wrong.

Studying consistently is important, but it’s how you study that will keep you going. Sitting at a desk for hours, stressing over your progress, will not get you where you want to be any faster. Here’s what I learned:

Take breaks.
I didn’t want to become someone with poor posture and no life outside of coding. Whenever I felt my focus slipping, I stretched, went for a walk, or just moved around. This break gives your body and brain time to recharge.

Stop beating yourself up.
There were days when I didn’t study much and felt like I’d wasted time. But whether you study for 10 minutes or two hours, the key is quality over quantity. In 10 focused minutes, you might make more progress than in hours of distracted study.

Have a plan.
At first, I would study until I was exhausted, with no clear direction. That wasn’t helpful. Creating a plan for what you want to learn each session makes your studying more effective and keeps you from jumping between topics and feeling overwhelmed.

These steps helped me avoid burnout and stay motivated. They may not all work for you, and that’s okay! The key is finding what helps you improve a little every day, and keeps you moving forward!
