You Never Know, Until You Try

Challenge yourself to be better

I was confident in my abilities and thought it was time to branch out and put those skills to the test.

Do you know what I did next?

I reached out to a recruiter from Uber, presented my resume, and a summary of why I would be a great fit for their company.

And guess what?

I had a technical interview scheduled.

Remember how I said I was confident? That confidence bled over into my study habits. I studied for the interview but I didn’t give it my full effort. I thought that I knew enough and that I could get by.

I went into the interview with a head full of arrogance but when the interviewer presented the question, all that bravado evaporated.

I was like, “What have I gotten myself into?”.

It wasn’t anything good.

That was my worst interview ever. I kept pausing and stopping. When they tried to explain the question to me over and over again, I couldn’t quite grasp the concept. I asked to stop the interview because I was bombing, terribly.

Fortunately, the interviewer was nice enough to walk me through the problem and I ended up solving it, but still; I was embarrassed. I was humiliated by my performance.

The only thing that interview did was make me realize that I don’t know it all but that is okay.

If you want to improve yourself, you have to challenge yourself. I probably had no business being in that interview, but now I know what I need to focus on to get better.

I took that leap and failed but I learned so much more in the process. It’s okay to take that plunge and no matter the outcome you have to be prepared, whether it results in success or failure. Just learn from the process and don’t be scared to try again.
