One Sentence Changed My Life
How I Broke Into Tech
They lied to us.
Our parents, teachers, society. They told us if we worked hard, got good grades, then we would be set for life. Of course I accepted the lie as universal truth because, it’s shoved down our throats since we were knee high.
I got good grades and I worked hard. I tolled away at dead end jobs waiting for that something that would changed my life.
But suddenly my boss called me into his office and said the whole, you know, it’s not you, it’s me and I was laid off from another dead end job.
Hold up, wait a minute now!
This shouldn’t be happening to me. I followed the rules and I did what was required.
As I was in the middle of having an existential crisis, my sister, already involved in the tech word asked,
“Why don’t you try web development?”
I never looked back.
I immersed myself in all things HTML. Once I was finished there CSS was next.
And then Javascript.
I studied relentlessly. I built projects that brought me joy. I asked questions tirelessly. I helped others, even when I had no clue what I was doing. I posted my projects on LinkedIn. My introvert cringed, but I reached out to recruiters with my resume.
I did everything possible to try to break into tech. Rejection was my middle name and self doubt had taken root but I had come too far.
You have to refuse to give up on yourself.
And that’s what I did.
After almost two years, I finally got that yes.
My point is, that no matter where you begin or what you thought should happen with your life, you can change it.
All it takes is one sentence.
What will yours be?
