Tech Prep: Research With Purpose
Do your research
If you're like me, you want to know what you're walking into when faced with an unknown situation.
Interviews are prime examples of such unknowns. While you can't anticipate every detail, you can always walk away with more knowledge than when you entered. Interviews are not just about being evaluated; they're opportunities for you to learn more about the company—and that starts with research.
Research the Role
You know the position you're interviewing for, and you have access to platforms like LinkedIn. Reach out to current employees of the company and ask about their experiences—what’s the interview process like? What does a typical day look like? The more insight you gather, the more confident you’ll feel walking in.
Research the Company
Just because a company shows interest in you doesn't mean you should have blind faith in them. Visit their website and review their blogs, newsletters, and press releases. Show up to the interview prepared with thoughtful questions based on what you’ve learned. How they respond will give you valuable insight into their culture and priorities.
Research Anonymous Reviews
Companies aren't always transparent about how they treat their employees. Sites like Glassdoor provide anonymous reviews from employees and can give you a peek into what working there might be like. Sometimes, what you discover might even make you reconsider the interview altogether.
Research the Competition
This one may seem a little extra, but knowing who the company’s competitors are can be a game-changer. Understand their market landscape—are they better positioned than their rivals? How do they plan to stay competitive? Asking about this shows your strategic thinking and curiosity about the company’s future.
Researching isn't just about preparing for an interview; it’s about determining whether the company aligns with your career goals. Will they support your growth and advancement? By doing your homework, you’ll not only be ready to answer questions but also gain a clearer understanding of whether this opportunity is the right fit for you.
