The AWS Conundrum

Azure or AWS

In partnership with

I am being thrown into AWS at work. Learning how to use GitHub Actions to push images to their container registry. Connecting IAM to our third-party login system. And trying to make heads or tails of how to connect our services to AWS.

I am excited to have this rewarding experience, but there is just one problem. In my spare time, I am learning Azure.

And I am unsure how to proceed.

Azure or AWS?

Both have pros and cons of pursuing them, but the most pressing issue for me is that I get lost trying to navigate AWS. I am expected to have answers, and when I don’t, it just makes me want to pause my studies with Azure and pivot towards AWS.

But I don’t want to lose my progress with Azure.

It’s a frustrating situation to find myself in because I want to do well at work, but I also don’t want to start over. So I am thinking the best course of action is to learn both. It sounds overwhelming, but hear me out.

I already have the basic concepts of Azure down. It wouldn’t be hard to translate that over. Once you’ve mastered one platform, the others stop feeling so foreign. Identity, compute, storage, networking, they all exist across clouds. They just wear different clothes and use different names.

All I have to do is connect the dots. That shouldn’t be too hard.

And maybe that’s the real lesson here. It’s not about choosing sides. It’s about building the flexibility to move between platforms, to see patterns instead of roadblocks, and to remind myself that progress in one doesn’t erase progress in the other.

So while AWS might be the mountain I have to climb for work, Azure is the one that keeps me sharp in my free time. And if I can learn to climb both? That only makes me stronger.

Because at the end of the day, cloud isn’t about the logo in the corner. It’s about solving problems. And the more languages you can speak, whether that’s Azure or AWS, the more doors you can open.

So I’ll keep connecting the dots.

Hopefully!
