The Conflict
Two coins of the same side
When I started learning cloud, I chose Azure. I had experience with it in the past and I liked the fact that its popularity was growing. I committed time to understanding Azure fundamentals, and I now have two certs under my belt.
Then all of a sudden, I am being pulled into the realm of AWS at work.
Thrown into a role where AWS was the primary cloud provider, I had to hit the ground running. I had to configure Github Actions to deploy our website to a bucket. I had to reroute login to a third party provider and new concepts like EC2, S3, IAM policies, were not making it any easier. I had picked Azure, confident I was eventually going to run into it again but now AWS was stealing Azure’s thunder. And I begin questioning whether I should drop Azure and go all-in on AWS.
But, then I thought, forget that. I had come far in my Azure journey and would not abandon it because of doubt. Just because I’m working in AWS doesn’t mean I have to pivot away from Azure. In fact, learning both is a strength and not a conflict.
Cloud skills are transferable. Concepts like identity access management, networking, storage, and compute all exist across providers. The names are different, but the principles remain. Knowing Azure helps me grasp AWS faster, and vice versa. I don’t have to choose sides in a multi-cloud world.
More importantly, I’m still in control of my learning journey. What I use for work can be dictated by business needs, but what I build on weekends? That’s mine. I still spin up Azure projects. I still study for Azure certifications. I still experiment with Bicep, Azure Functions, and Resource Groups because I want to.
So if you find yourself in a similar spot, here’s my advice:
Don’t give up what excites you. Learn what you need to do your job well, but continue investing in the cloud path that motivates you. AWS may be a necessity but I can still learn Azure.
You don’t have to pivot, you just have to grow.
