The Doomsday Sayers

AI will pave the way

Most of the content flooding social media these days is about AI. And rightfully so. It’s new. It’s exciting. And now, people are saying it will take your job.

Software engineers will become obsolete, and there’s no point in continuing down this brittle road.

Well, I say that’s bull because AI is overhyped.

Sure, it can solve simple problems, but have you ever asked it something complex? It starts to spit out confidently wrong answers. It generates code that might look good on the surface but falls apart when tested against real-world scenarios.

Why AI Can’t Replace Software Engineers (Yet)

  1. AI Doesn’t Understand Context Like Humans Do
AI models don’t think. They predict patterns based on existing data. They don’t understand why something works the way it does; they only mimic what has already been written. Do you know how often I’ve had to reword a question because the AI could not give me a straight answer?

  2. Software Development Is More Than Just Writing Code
Being a software engineer isn’t just about typing out functions and loops. It’s about:

    • Understanding business needs

    • Collaborating with teams

    • Debugging complex, unpredictable issues

    • Making trade-offs between performance, security, and scalability

AI can assist in these areas, but it doesn’t replace the human decision-making process that underlies good engineering.

  3. AI Introduces New Problems
Let’s not forget that AI-generated code still needs to be reviewed, debugged, and maintained by humans. AI tools can accelerate development, but they also introduce risks, from hallucinated bugs to security vulnerabilities that no one saw coming.

AI won’t replace software engineers; it will simply make them more productive. Think of it like an advanced autocomplete—it speeds up certain tasks, but it doesn’t remove the need for human expertise.

The engineers who adapt—who learn to leverage AI while honing their problem-solving skills—will be the ones who thrive.

So, don’t buy into the doomsday narrative. Keep learning. Keep growing. And, most importantly, keep coding. AI isn’t coming for your job. But another human engineer who understands AI better than you? Maybe.
