Under Pressure

Oh what to learn

In partnership with

One of the most frustrating parts of building a tech career is feeling like your learning path is being dictated by external forces. You commit to a platform, language, or certification, only to find your job pulling you in a completely different direction. Suddenly, you’re left wondering if all that effort was wasted.

I’ve been there. I invested months into mastering Azure, earning certifications, building projects, and feeling confident about my progress. Then work shifted me into AWS, and overnight I was knee-deep in S3 buckets, IAM policies, and EC2 instances. The temptation to drop Azure and pivot fully into AWS was real.

But here’s the lesson I learned: your career may follow business needs, but your learning journey is yours to own.

The truth is, tech isn’t about choosing one platform forever. Skills are transferable. The concepts behind networking, security, and compute exist everywhere—the names just change. What you learn in one cloud, framework, or tool often accelerates your understanding of another. Instead of seeing my Azure investment as wasted, I started to see it as leverage.

That shift in mindset gave me control back. At work, I do what the business require; AWS. On my own time, I continue building in Azure, because it excites me. Both matter. One pays the bills, the other fuels growth and curiosity. Together, they make me a stronger, more versatile engineer.

So if you’re torn between what your job demands and what you love learning, don’t think of it as a choice. Think of it as an expansion. The path you walk at work doesn’t erase the one you’ve carved for yourself.

At the end of the day, your learning belongs to you. Protect it. Nurture it. Own it.
