While I was on PTO, I wanted to check my computer. To keep up with the latest. That was a mistake. Scrolling through emails, I was taken aback by the fact that during my absence, the program I was on had cut funding and was looking to move the remaining people onto different projects.

While this was expected, I at least thought we would make it till next year. Now, my future and the future of my co-workers are in limbo. We don’t know what to expect or how to proceed. And I will admit, I am scared.

The landscape of the job market is abysmal. People are laid off for months and even years. Job seekers can’t sniff an interview. And even when they do manage to land one, someone is always more qualified.

It’s a cycle of despair out there, and I have no interest in joining.

But if I must, here is what I am doing to prepare myself.

Talk to the Manager

  • Speaking to your manager isn’t just about saying goodbye. It’s about cementing that connection and going over your achievements. Have them write you a letter or recommendation. Have them write down your achievements.

Document Achievements

  • If you worked somewhere for a long time, it’s not going to be easy to remember all of your accomplishments. That is why you have to reach out to your manager. Reach out to people you’ve worked with. Review your work. Anything that you can mention and take with you, you should write down

Network 

  • This isn’t a goodbye. You have to reach out to your colleagues to see if they have anything in their back pocket. It’s easier to network in-house, so do so. Don’t be afraid to reach out. They want to help.

These may not be foolproof in securing a job, but these are steps you can control. Because I can’t really control anything else in this process. All I can do is hope for the best in this current climate.
